Former Foreign Secretary David Miliband has hit out at nations subsidising fishing on the high seas.
He slammed the “harmful subsidies” which enable fishing fleets to operate in fisheries that would otherwise cost too much in fuel to reach.
His comments came as three separate reports highlighted the cost to the taxpayer and the environmental damaged caused by fishing subsidies.
Mr Miliband stopped short of demanding that all subsidies be outlawed but made it clear that those which promote destructive fishing, such as bottom trawling in the high seas, should be phased out.
